Real vs. Fake News

Mingalabar! Welcome to Than Lwin Times’ Real vs. Fake News program.

This program checks for fake news and misinformation about revolution events on social media after the military takeover.

Today, we will verify the news circulated on social media saying, “The People Defense Forces (PDFs) burned down the houses of the villagers in Pala Town in Tanintharyi Region’s Palaw Township on 15 August.

This fake news has been spread by the pro-junta Telegram accounts of PAN, Han Nyein Oo, and Ba Nyunt.

The Than Lwin Times investigated the post and photos and discovered them to be false.

In fact, on 15 August, Pala police station in Palaw Township, Myeik District, launched mortar shells into nearby villages such as Zayat Seik and Bai Pyin villages, according to independent media outlets.

The Pala Police Station fired heavy weapons into Thingan Taw Village and No.1 Ward in Pala Town on the 18 and 19 of August.

Two civilians in the village were killed and seven others injured in the explosion, according to Reuters, citing locals.

Also on August 17, three men were wounded by the shooting of junta soldiers who were lying in ambush near the entrance of Pala Town, while on 18 and 19 August, a woman was killed and two men were injured in an explosion in Ward No. 1 in Thingan Taw village and Ward No. 1 in Pala Town.

The Than Lwin Times revealed that junta supporters’ accounts were sharing these photos on Telegram and that it was all propaganda.
